Tell me about your pricing plans for residents?
We recognize that the unexpected changes of an Alzheimers patient can effect financial pictures on a monthly basis. We offer set, flat rates including room and board, home-cooked meals, transportation, and incontinence needs. (Excludes medications.)
Are meals served at scheduled times?
All meals, snacks and beverages are served family style. While breakfast, lunch and dinner are served at general times, we try to respect and support individual preferences. Nutrition is a critical component in our program. We encourage all residents to eat their meals, and we will make every effort to accomodate special dietary needs.
Does Select Group Homes have specific visiting hours?
We have no set visiting hours. Select Group Homes has an "open door" visitation policy. We encourage family members and friends to visit when they want, and as often as they want, day or night. All we ask is that visitors respect the privacy and needs of the other residents. We strongly encourage the families to be involved in the residents life. It gives the residents continuity. Families are encouraged to take their loved ones out for family gatherings and special occasions whenever they wish.
Families are also welcome to have meals with the residents. We only ask that you give us a few hours notice so that we can make sure there is enough food for everyone.
Can my mother walk around at night if she cannot sleep?
Yes. Our staff is trained to support the resident who may encounter a restless evening of sleep. However, our staff is also trained to understand why this restlessness may occur. If there is evidence that this restlessness is a patterned bahavior, in conjunction with the family and the attending physician, we will develop a care plan that will meet the needs of the resident.
Isn't this just like a nursing home?
No. We are a residential group Assisted Living Facility. Nursing Homes provide a more intensive level of care. Nursing Home residents usually have complex medical conditions that require interventions such as injections or feeding tubes. Nursing homes are oriented toward a medical model of care. We provide a less intensive level of care and generally do not subsribe to the medical model of care. We provide assistance with bathing, eating, dressing and toileting. We have a more home like feeling.
Does Select Group Homes have nurses on staff?
Yes, we have LPN's who manage the home and oversee the care of each resident. Our nurses will also work with the resident's physician when minor illnesses or medication problems arise.
Is your home just for people with early stage dementia?
No. It is our philosophy that our homes are created to provide care for all levels of dementia and Alzheimer's regardless of the stage. Also, it is the guiding principle that our residents be allowed to "age in place". As the progression of any dementia-related illness mandates increased medical attention to our residents, we will work with, and encourage, families to identify care that can be brought in to the home, thereby allowing the resident to remain in this, their home.
Do you help residents take their medication?
Abosolutely! In fact, we supervise or administer all of the resident's medication, as we believe that this aspect of care is dangerous for the residents to cope with on their own. All resident medication is kept in a locked medication room in the office.
Will my father have to move on to a nursing home when he needs more and more care?
Embracing the philosophy that all of our residents should be allowed to "age in place", Select Group Homes will work as an advocate to ensure families are well-informed about, and can arrange for, the appropriate care that allows their loved one to remain in our home. Our role as advocate is one of the founding principles of the company. The majority of our residents stay with us until the end of their lives.
What kinds of behaviors are your staff capable of handling?
We are equipped to work with individuals who display most of the common (and not so common) behaviors associated with Alzheimer's Disease and dementia. Behaviors such as hoarding, "shopping", wandering, paranoia, hiding objects, confusion and disorientation, reluctance to bath, difficulty dressing, problems with toileting, agitation, anger, frustration, difficulty with mobility, problems with eating, withdrawl and exit seeking are all behaviors that we expect to see in our residents. We try to "normalize" these behaviors and when they become problematic in our "normalized" home-like environment, we brainstorm and try to use creative interventions to lessen the impact of the behavior on the other residents, the environment and staff.
What behaviors are you incapable of dealing with?
Physical aggression is very difficult for us to deal with successfully in our environment. If a resident is dangerous to himself or others we will try behavioral intervention first, then use medication when it is ordered. We only use phychoactive medications as a last resort for dealing with problem behaviors. In most cases we will try every other intervention possible before giving medication to a resident to control behavior. We have found that our home-like setting, once a resident is acclimated, is a calming influence. Auditory and visual stimuli are minimized to avoid agitating residents as well.
Do you add fees, as Dad needs more care?
No. At Select Group Homes we provide all services at a fixed, affordable rate. Our services are equally provided to all residents, with no financial increases based on levels of care.
How can I be involved with Dad's care? How can I be involved in his life?
This is your new home. You can and should be involved in every way that you feel comfortable with. Just ask yourself this question: "How can I best care for and support my loved one? What is best for them and our relationship?" Be assured that we will support you every step of the way.
What are your staffing ratios?
Our staffing ratios are among the very highest in our industry. We provide a staff to resident ratio of 1:3 during daytime hours. 1:5 in the evening hours and 1:9 during bedtime hours.
I have seen several assisted living facilities. What makes Select Group Homes different?
As a pioneer in residential living for those with Alzheimer's and other forms of dementia-related illnesses, Select Group Homes offers several unique features that make us different:
We are truly the residential alternative to institutional care for those with Alzheimers or dementia. Our home is not a wing or unit that is part of a larger campus or institutional environment. We are a home nestled into an established, safe residential neighborhood. Our residents don't live in our workplace. Our employees work in our residents home. And in our home, we employ the industries best staff to resident ratios. Our staff is highly trained to provide personal care assistance with the activities of daily living.
